Vaping helps people stop smoking-even when they don’t want to, based on new research from the University of East Anglia. “However the concept of using e-cigarettes to stop smoking, and particularly long term use, remains controversial. “We wanted to discover more on how people use e-cigarettes to give up smoking-and whether vaping supports long term smoking abstinence.” The research team completed in-depth interviews with 40 vapers. They asked them about their tobacco smoking background and prior quit attempts, and about the way they started vaping, their vape create, preferred flavours and strength, and whether or not they had switched to vaping in try to give up smoking.

“These were our accidental quitters,” said Dr. Notley. “They hadn’t meant to quit smoking along with tried vaping on a whim, or since they had been offered it by friends. They went on to like it, and merely then saw it as a a prospective substitute for smoking.” “Many individuals discussed the way they saw vaping was actually a no pressure strategy to quitting,” she added.
While the majority of the group switched quickly and completely from smoking to vaping, some found themselves using both cigarettes and vaping, then sliding towards stopping smoking. “We found that people did occasionally relapse with a cigarette, mainly because of social or emotional reasons, nevertheless it didn’t necessarily lead to a full relapse. “This research implies that vaping is a viable long term substitute for smoking, with substantial implications for tobacco harm reduction.” The research was funded by Cancer Research UK.
